1947 Jackie Robinson First Career Home Run Program
Presented is a New York Giants' game program/scorecard from the April 18, 1947, contest at the Polo Grounds when Jackie Robinson, of the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers, hit his first Major League home run. It was Hall of Famer Robinson's third Major League game. Before 38,736 fans in the Giants' home opener, New York's Dave Koslo pitched a complete game, winning 10-4. Vic Lombardi, Brooklyn's starter, had the loss. Robinson batted second and played first base. With the score at 1-1, Robinson led off the top of the third inning and hit an 0-1 pitch from Koslo for a home run to deep left field. For the game, Robinson added a single, and went 2-for4, with two runs and an RBI. In this '47 season, Brooklyn won the National League pennant and lost 4-3 in games in the World Series to the New York Yankees. Robinson went on to became the Rookie of the Year, batted .297, and led the NL in steals, with 29. The program is neatly scored in pencil. Including covers, the program/scorecard has 16 pages. There is some darkening of the program because of the passage of time. All of the pages are present and in excellent condition, but the binding has cracking and some of the pages have come loose from the staple that held them. The scored program/scorecard makes a great remembrance of Jackie Robinson's first home run.
