1948 Pittsburgh Pirates Team-Signed Baseball w/Honus Wagner on Sweet Spot & Photo Documentation (PSA)
<p>"He was perhaps the greatest right-handed hitter of all time," said Babe Ruth of Honus Wagner, the player Ruth picked as the greatest shortstop ever. Wagner was one of five inaugural inductees into the Hall of Fame in 1936. Displayed is an official National League (Ford Frick) baseball that was signed by Honus Wagner and 14 other players or coaches of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948. Wagner played 21 big league seasons, mostly with the Pirates. In his career, Honus led the National League in batting eight times, still a record that has only been matched by Tony Gwynn, in 1997. Wagner hit .329 lifetime and led the NL in slugging 5-times and stolen bases 6-times. He amassed 3,430 hits. Wagner was a coach with the Pirates for 39-years, and when he signed this baseball, he was the Pirates' hitting coach. Also signing the ball was Hall of Fame slugger Ralph Kiner, and outfielder Dixie Walker. Walker was a .306 lifetime hitter who won the NL batting title in 1944 and was known in "Brooklynese" as The People's Cherce [Choice]". Walker was also known as the organizer of the Brooklyn Dodger petition to keep Jackie Robinson out of the Major Leagues, an action that Walker said was motivated by his desire to avoid prejudiced backlash against his business in the South. Another notable signature is from Wally Westlake. A number of the 15 signatures are illegible. The others can be categorized as Fair or Satisfactory. The signed baseball comes with a 3.25" x 5" black and white photo of Honus Wagner taken on June 6, 1948, the day the ball was signed. In blue ink on the photo is written "6-6-48" and "Honus Wagner." Wagner is leaning on a railing from the corner of the Pitsburgh dugout. He still shows some of the burly strength of his playing days. Together, the signed ball and the original fan photograph make for an outstanding remembrance of an all-time baseball idol. Comes with LOA.</p>
