1949 Bowman Complete Set (240)
Off the success of its initial baseball offering in 1948, Bowman decided to put some color in its cards for 1949 and came up with this fine 240-card set. The set is anchored by the rookie cards of #84 Roy Campanella (EX+) and 226 Duke Snider (EX+ corners, light crease), plus the pasteboards of stars such as #24 Musial (EX corners, o/c, crease), 27 Feller (EX corners, o/c, light crease), 33 Spahn (EX corners, crease), 36 Reese (EX corners, slight crease), 46 Roberts RC (EX+), 50 Robinson (EX corners, great centering, crease), 60 Berra (FR, tape, crease), 214 Ashburn RC (VG-EX to EX), 224 Satchell Paige (EX corners, crease) and 238 Lemon RC (EX to EX-MT, o/c). The set has more than its share of variations, beginning with card #109, in which Bowman added player names to the front of the cards. Twelve cards (#s 4, 78, 83, 85, 88, 98, 109, 124, 127, 132 and 143) were reprinted in the seventh series with slight modifications to the earlier versions. Aside from the stars, the cards grade 15% EX or better, 45% VG to VG-EX, 30% GD to VG and 10% lesser. Approx. 20% of the cards have creases, 10% have pinholes, a handful have tape residue.
