1949 Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees Oversized Team Photographs

It was 1949, and New York City was the capital of the baseball universe. The city had three major League teams, and it would soon seem that the World Series was played every year in New York - often with both teams from the Big City. In 1949, the New York Yankees won the American League Pennant, and the Brooklyn Dodgers were the National League Champions, with the Yankees winning the World Series. Some of Yankee stars in the team photo: Joe DiMaggio, Berra (signing as Larry, not Yogi), Rizzuto, Bauer, Lopat, Raschi, Keller, Heinrich, coach Frank Crosetti, and manager Casey Stengel. The Dodgers team photo is also stocked with notable baseball personages: Robinson, Campanella, Snider, Reese, Furillo, Hodges, Branca, Erskine, Cox, and Roe. Dodger manager Burt Shotton is pictured in civilian clothes, as he didn't manage in uniform. Interestingly, two of the Brooklyn coaches in the picture would soon be fired as scapegoats: third base coach Milt Stock for the Dodgers' loss to the Phillies on the last day of the season in 1950, costing Brooklyn the pennant, and bullpen coach Clyde Sukeforth, for the Dodgers loss to the New York Giants in the famous "Miracle of Coogan's Bluff" pennant play-off in 1951. Both oversized black and white photos come from the Brown Brothers archives. They were rolled and have a few creases. Each photo measures 12x19.5". The photos are sure to bring back memories of the Yankee/Dodger New York City rivalry in its glory days.
