1949 Joe Louis Signed Boxing Contract
After years of incomparable glory, Joe Louis relinquished his world heavyweight title in March, 1949, retiring undefeated. This agreement provides that Joe Louis will fight Al Hooseman in a 10-round exhibition match to be held on December 19, 1949 in Oakland, California. Louis is guaranteed $5,000 or 40% of the gross receipts, as well as three airline tickets from Detroit. Since most sources have Louis returning to fight in 1950, the result of tax problems, this document has historic interest, since it dates to 1949. The contract is very nicely signed by Joe Louis and his manager, Marshall Miles, both in black pen, and with both signatures 9/10. The 8 1/2" x 14" contract is a duplicate copy with original signatures, and has light horizontal mailing folds, but is otherwise EX-MT.
