1949 Notre Dame Football National Champions Team-Signed Photograph
Publicity photograph signed on the reverse by sixty-two members of the 1949 National Champion Notre Dame football team. The composite photo features images of thirteen members of the 1949 Notre Dame football team, including coach Frank Leahy, surrounding a large team-signed football. Included among the sixty-two signatures on the reverse are those of Heisman Trophy winner Leon Hart, Emil Sitka, Bob Toneff, Larry Coutre, Bob Williams, Bill Wightkin, Jim Martin, Rodney Johnson, Walt Grothaus, Bob Lally, Frank Spaniel, Frank Johnston, Daniel Modak, Jack Connor, James Hamley, Bill Higgins, Gene Smith, Chet Ostrowski, Jim Bartlett, Bill Kramer, and Art Perry. All the signatures are fairly uniform in grade average 8/10, except for three that are partially illegible (3/10 on average). Notre Dame finished the season with a 10-0 record and was named the National Champion following its win over SMU in the Cotton Bowl. It was the third National Championship for Notre Dame in the past four seasons and marked the end of what is considered one of the greatest collegiate sports dynasties in history. The photo (8x10") displays heavy creasing, a few edge tears, pinholes along the perimeter, and a small chip in the lower right corner. In Poor condition overall. It is housed in a unique double-sided glass display featuring a wood frame and base so that it can stand freely. Total dimensions: 14" long, 3" wide, and 15" high.
