1950's Mickey Mantle World Series Homerun Baseball
This is only one of eighteen World Series home run balls hit by Mickey Mantle, a record that still stands in Major League Baseball, and comes marked with the Mick’s signature, and his inscription, “To Barbara, Best Wishes, your friend, Mickey Mantle.” It dates to either one of the two late 50’s World Series with the Atlanta Braves, which marks its landing at the Milwaukee County Stadium, and its number (of the record eighteen), either #9 on October 5th, 1957, during game 3, or #10 or #11, one of two smacked into the stands on October 2nd, 1958, during game 2. The Yankees lost the ’57 title, but generated a miraculous comeback in the ’58 series to wreck vengeance upon the Braves. Mantle was hot at this period in his career, just coming off of a triple crown and A.L. MVP in ’56, hitting for the cycle his one and only time and winning his 2nd A.L. MVP in ’57, and in 1958 winning his 5th World Series (of 7 completed up to that time) with his beloved Yankee teammates. This Official National League (Giles) baseball shows obvious game use, and the inscription and signature rate 6/10, with the writing dating to the 1957-58 time frame. There are not many of these around, one of the crown jewels in the Mantle record book.
