1950 Milton Caniff LIFE Magazine Conceptual Cover Art

1950 Milton Caniff LIFE Magazine Conceptual Cover Art

Masterful work by the Rembrandt of the comic strip, Milton Caniff. Proposed cover design drawing on 8.5x11" onion skin paper features, "Enid as Princess Snowflower" (a reference to model Enid Ansley), model Chandler Cowles as Steve Canyon (with burning Chinese village blown up in background), and self-portrait of "Caniff at Drawing Board." Includes accompanying letter to TIME-LIFE exec ("Toni"), documenting how the Korean War, "has put Steve Canyon back into uniform in the Air Force." There are many comic book/strip references, plus Princess "SNOWFLOWER as the symbol of the only hope of guerrilla resistance we have against the Asiatic Communists, the combination might very well work up into a suitable LIFE cover story."
