1950 New York Yankees Compact
Presented is a still workable 1950 New York Yankees World Champions compact. We are not sure to whom the compact was awarded. It measures 3" in diameter, it is 1/2" tall, and it weighs 114 grams. On the top of the metal compact is a raised Yankee logo, and the top hat of the logo has red, white, and blue costume jewelry simulated stones. The 1950 Yankee team had a 98-56-1 regular season record, and the squad swept the Philadelphia Phillies "Whiz Kids" in the World Series. Hall of Famers on that '50 Yankee team: center fielder Joe DiMaggio, who hit .301; catcher Yogi Berra, who hit .322 with 28 home runs and 124 RBIs; shortstop Phil Rizzuto, who batted .324; first baseman Johnny Mize, who hit 25 homers; pitcher Whitey Ford, who went 9-1 with a 2.81 ERA. The team was managed by Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel. The compact seems to have had real use, and it does show the expected wear of its years with scratches, some tarnishing, and some "blistering" and "spidery" lines on the inside face and also on the exterior. The compact is an unusual remembrance for a powerhouse Yankee team, as the Yankees' '50 Championship was the second year of five consecutive seasons (1949-53) when the Yankees were the World Champions.
