1950 Sugar Ray Robinson Signed Hand and Fist Casting
Only a few people had the pleasure of feeling what it was like to be abused by the hands that served as models for these eerily realistic, gilded plaster-cast copies of Sugar Ray's own open left hand and closed right fist. Those people had names like Armstrong, Bell, LaMotta, Gavilan, Fullmer, Basilio and Turpin -- i.e., all the great fight names of the '40s, 50s and 60s who got in Robinson's way, to their regret. While Sugar Ray actually lot 19 times in 206 pro fights, rare indeed was anyone surviving the hands when they were young and faster than a blur, and the casts of his hands just seem to produce the optical illusion of movement if you stare at them long enough. Of course, given that they are Sugar Ray's, is it so difficult to believe that his hands were not of this earth? The fitting tribute piece was created by French artist Chirotheque Francaise in 1950. The hands were crafted independently of each other, painted gold and each mounted to a black marble base measuring 19 x 11 x 1 3/4". On the underside of the right hand is an engraved, scripted facsimile of Robinson's signature as well as the artist's name and "1950". Realistic-looking indeed, the hands not only are knitted with tight ligaments and tendons but the fingernails are long and impeccably manicured -- a Sugar Ray obession. Piece is EX with several scratches on the base that can be easily removed through resotration. This is the first time this incredible work has been offered at public sale and it comes with a detailed LOA from Sugar Ray's son, Ray Robinson II.
