1950s Charley Trippi Wilson Cardboard Advertising Display

1950s Charley Trippi Wilson Cardboard Advertising Display

Displayed is a Charlie Trippi beautiful, full-color advertisement meant for display in sporting goods stores to promote Wilson's football products. Trippi, in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was a brilliant all-around back who starred for the University of Georgia Bulldogs (1942-46), whose time as a college player was shortened in the middle of his college career by his service in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. After his military service, Trippi returned to play again for Georgia. His military service meant that Trippi began his pro career at age 26 when, after a bidding war between the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL and the New York Yankees of the competing All American Football Conference, Trippi signed with the Cardinals for the then-astronomical amount of $100,000. Trippi played nine pro seasons, all with the Cardinals. He was, at various times, an offensive halfback, a quarterback, and a defensive back. In his career, Trippi played in 99 games. He carried 687 times for 3,506 yards, an outstanding 5.1 yards per carry. He was 205-for-434 as a passer, with 16 touchdowns and 31 interceptions, and he also intercepted four passes. In addition, Trippi was a punter who punted 196 times for a 40.3-yard average, and the versatile back also returned punts and kickoffs. The colorful cardboard ad display is 12.5" across the base and 16" from the bottom to the display's highest point - the outstretched hand. Trippi is wearing a Cardinals uniform with his usual number "62." Printed on the image of a football in the display are the words, "When I play Wilson...I play the best." At the bottom of the display is stated, "Charlie Trippi is a member of the Wilson Advisory Board." Also, Trippi's simulated signature is at the bottom of the display. Charlie Trippi was the oldest living member of the Pro Football HOF, and he passed away on Oct. 21, 2022. The display has its original easel back. This offering is in amazing condition, close to NRMT.
