1951-57 Stan Musial St. Louis Cardinals Game Used Bat (PSA GU 9.5)

1951-57 Stan Musial St. Louis Cardinals Game Used Bat (PSA GU 9.5)

Stan "The Man" Musial was one of the greatest players in baseball history. Presented is a 1951-57 Stan Musial game used Adirondack bat. Hall of Famer Musial grew up in Donora, Pennsylvania, and he was a Donora High School baseball teammate of Buddy Griffey, father of Ken Griffey Sr, and grandfather of Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. Musial was signed out of high school as a pitcher by the St. Louis Cardinals. Musial played in the Cardinals farm system for several years as simultaneously a pitcher and an outfielder. After he injured his arm, he became a full-time hitter and made the St Louis Cardinals in 1941 as a 20-year-old. By 1943, he was a star, leading the National League in batting, at .357. Musial earned his nickname on June 23, 1946, during a game at Ebbets Field against the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Brooklyn fans began chanting "Here comes the man," when Musial was due to bat, St. Louis sportswriter Bob Broeg wrote about it, and Musial became "Stan the Man." An outfielder and first baseman, Musial played each of his 22 Major League seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. The lefty swinging Musial used an unusual batting stance in which he put his right shoulder and forearm in front of part of his face. His stance was described by pitcher Ted Lyons as, "Peeking around the corner to see if the cops were coming." Stan had 3,630 hits, 475 homers, and a .331 lifetime batting average. Musial was a 3-time MVP, a 3-time World Champion, a 24-time All-Star and a 7-time batting champion. The displayed bat is an Adirondack Model Number 15B ash bat. The bat has a standard finish. The bat exhibits outstanding use. It has a cracked handle that has been repaired. Many ball marks and ball stitch marks are visible on the left, right, and back barrel. The front and back barrels show evidence of cleat marks. Also visible on the bat are green streaks from bat racks. The handle has been scored to provide an improved grip, and the handle also shows evidence of pine tar use. The Model Number (15B) is stamped into the knob, and the bat weight (32.5 ounces) is written in black ink on the knob. The scoring of the handle is a familiar Musial technique. In Bob Hills' book Crack of the Bat/The Louisville Slugger Story, Musial is quoted, "I'd scrape up the handle a little bit. That way I could hold it better." Branded on the top barrel is "Personal Musial Type Model," a rare Adirondack brand with "Personal" above the player name and "Personal" below. The game used Musial bat comes with a PSA Letter of Grading and Authenticity The bat received a PSA/DNA grade of "GU 9.5." The offering is an incredible bat from an incredible hitter.
