1951 Don Newcombe Becomes First African American Pitcher to Win 20 Games Ticket Stub PSA VG-EX 4 (Pop 1 of 1 - Highest Graded)

Philadelphia Phillies ticket stub issued for a game against the Brooklyn Dodgers on September 29, 1951, in which Don Newcombe became the first African American pitcher to win 20 games in the Major Leagues. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. This is the ONLY example of this ticket stub graded at this level by PSA, with NONE graded higher. Its rarity is noted by the fact that it is one of two examples listed in the PSA Population Report and just the second we have seen. Newcombe's historic 20th win came in dominating fashion, as he limited the Phillies to seven hits and no runs in his complete-game 5-0 win. Newcombe joined the Dodgers in 1949 and quickly established himself as one of the league's best pitchers, winning, respectively, 17, 19, and 20 games in his first three seasons. He lost two years to military service in 1952 and 1953, but when he returned he won twenty or more games in two of the next three seasons, including a league-high 27 wins in 1956, which earned him both the Cy Young and MVP Awards that year. The ticket stub (1.5x3") displays a stamp on the front that reads "Obstructed View." A few light stains are evident on the front and reverse.
