1951 George Weiss New York Yankees World Series Ring
Offered is an exceedingly rare George Weiss 1951 New York Yankees World Series ring. George Weiss, in the Hall of Fame as an executive, was an executive with the New York Yankees from 1932-1960, and his work as the team's farm director and then the Yankees' general manager was a key part of an astounding 19 New York Yankee American League pennants and 15 World Series Championships won during his reign. In fact, the Yankees are the only team to have ever won more than three World Championships in a row, and both of the instances (1936-39 and 1949-53) were engineered with Weiss as the key executive. Weiss grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, and he attended Yale University for a year before dropping out to work in his father's grocery store. He became involved in professional baseball at 20 years old as the founder of the New Haven MaxFeds of the independent Colonial League. Later, he ran the New Haven Class A farm team of the Yankees in the Eastern league, and his New Haven club won three Eastern League Championships. Later, he worked two seasons with the minor league Baltimore franchise of the International League. When the Yankees wanted to emulate the farm system built by Branch Rickey with the St. Louis Cardinals, Weiss was hired as the Yankees' farm director and served from 1932-47. Weiss was a crucial part of nine American League pennants and eight World Championships. Then, from 1947-1960 he was the Yankees general manager, and he was instrumental in 10 more AL pennants and seven more World Series titles. In his Yankee years, Weiss was responsible for bringing Hall of Famers Yogi Berra, Joe Gordon, and Phil Rizzuto into the Yankee farm system and then to the Major Leagues. Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio was purchased from the San Francisco Seals, not a Yankee farm team, during the Weiss years. Weiss was also instrumental in bringing countless other players into the Yankee farm system and the Major League club: Hank Bauer, Bobby Brown, Red Rolfe, Charlie Keller, Joe Page, and Vic Raschi - to name a few. Weiss negotiated contracts individually with only three or four of the biggest stars each year and had Roy Hamey, his assistant, negotiate the other contracts. In the 1951 season, when this ring was issued, the Yankees went 98-56 in the regular season and defeated the New York Giants, winner of the National League pennant on Bobby's Thomson's Miracle of Coogan's Bluff home run, 4-2 in games to win the World Series. Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel was the club's skipper, and Hall of Famers Berra, Mize, Rizzuto, Joe DiMaggio, and Mantle were on the team. In 1961, Weiss was the general manager and president of the New York Mets. He once again hired Stengel, and Weiss helped bring the Mets team into existence as an expansion franchise. The Miracle Mets won the 1969 World Series. Weiss had retired three years earlier, but a number of the players he signed for the Mets were a large part of the '69 Champions. The ring is size 9. Engraved in vintage script is "14 K" gold and "Dieges & Cluss" stamped on the inside band. Also engraved on the inner band is "George Weiss." On both shanks of the ring is 1951 and the Yankees logo. Around the face of the ring is imprinted "New York Yankees World Champions." The ring weighs 29 grams, and the center of the ring face has a 1/4 carat diamond. The classically beautiful ring will have lasting value as the ring of one of the architects of the great Yankee dynasty, and of the ring of the New York Yankees 1951 World Champions.
