1951 New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers "Phantom" World Series Program
Scarce "phantom" World Series program issued for the 1951 World Series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. The reason this is referred to as a "phantom" program is because the Yankees faced the New York Giants in the World Series, not the Dodgers. The Giants and Dodgers finished the season tied for first place, which resulted in a best-of-three playoff to decide the pennant. Because the World Series took place immediately afterwards, the printer didn't have enough time to wait and see which team won and then print the programs. Therefore, two sets of programs were published in quantities sufficient for the first two games. After Bobby Thomson's dramatic game-winning home run in Game 3 of the playoffs gave the Giants the win, the Yankees/Dodgers programs were discarded. Fortunately for collectors, not all copies were destroyed. The offered example has been consigned by a gentleman whose grandfather was the president of Blanchard Press, the company that printed the 1951 World Series programs. His grandfather saved a few at the time, and this example has not seen the light of day since 1951. As such, the forty-eight page program (8.75x11.5") is not scored and remains in Excellent condition overall.
