1951 Rocky Marciano Training Gloves for Joe Louis Fight

1951 Rocky Marciano Training Gloves for Joe Louis Fight

Maroon G&S training gloves were worn by Rocky Marciano en route to the most important fight of his career. It was certainly the biggest fight of his so far flawless career, and in Madison Square Garden on October 26, 1951 Joe Louis stepped into the ring with the highly touted, eminent new heavyweight from Brockton Mass. Marciano, who was previously undefeated in 36 fights was able to perform a most shocking upset of the declining Joe Louis in the 8th round after completely tossing him from the ring with a left-right combination. This was to be Louis’ final fight. Training gloves are inscribed in white paint on the right glove, “Rocky Marciano training gloves given to me at Stillman’s Gym. Training for his fight with Joe Louis - Rocky K.O. Joe Louis 8th Rd. Oct. 26, 1951.” Paint has held up remarkably well, only lightly foxed and still bold. Gloves show excellent use and wear, although completely intact with original laces. From the collection of amateur fighter Lou Orlando. LOA from Craig Hamilton of JO Sports, Inc.
