1951 Roy Campanella Brooklyn Dodgers Photograph (PSA Type I)

1951 Roy Campanella Brooklyn Dodgers Photograph (PSA Type I)

Displayed is a 1951, Type I photo of Roy Campanella, one of the best Campanella photos we have seen. Taken by famed photographer Barney Stein, the photo depicts a beaming Campanella set in front of a gorgeous sky. No wonder Campy is smiling - it's only natural since '51 was a great year for the Hall of Fame catcher. He won the National League MVP that season as he batted .325, with 33 home runs and 108 RBIs. Campanella also won the NL MVP in 1953 and 1955, and he was a part of five Brooklyn Dodgers pennant winners, and the Dodgers' only World Series championship in Brooklyn, in 1955. Campanella began his Major League career in 1948, and only played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League. Because of Major League Baseball's "Color Line," before playing in the Dodgers organization Campanella played for nine seasons in the Negro National League and in the Mexican League. In January 1958, Campanella was paralyzed in an automobile accident, and he did not play with the Dodgers when they moved to Los Angeles. In his ten-year career with the Dodgers, Campy hit .276, with 242 home runs. The 8x10" photo depicts Campanella in a Dodgers home uniform standing with a beautiful sky in the background, a favorite technique of photographer Barney Stein. The back of the photo features a Brooklyn Dodgers stamp. The Campanella photo exhibits some slight foxing and some darkening because of age. The photo has been encapsulated and certified by PSA as "Type I AUTHENTIC." The Barney Stein photo captures a happy Campanella at his playing peak.
