1951 World Series Program Pair Including Scarce "Phantom" Program vs. Dodgers
Pair of 1951 World Series programs consisting of an official program for the Series between the Yankees and Giants, and a scarce "phantom" program for the Series between the Yankees and Dodgers. The reason the latter is referred to as a "phantom" program is because the Yankees and Dodgers never met in the 1951 World Series. The Giants and Dodgers finished the season tied for first place, which resulted in a best-of-three playoff to decide the pennant. Because the World Series took place immediately afterwards, the printer didn't have enough time to wait and see which team won and then print the programs. Therefore, two sets of programs were published in quantities sufficient for the first two games. After Bobby Thomson's dramatic game-winning home run in Game 3 of the playoffs gave the Giants the win, the Yankees/Dodgers programs were discarded. Fortunately for collectors, not all copies were destroyed. The offered lot of two programs has been consigned by a gentleman whose grandfather was the president of Blanchard Press, the company that printed the 1951 World Series programs. His grandfather saved a few of both the official programs and "phantoms" at the time, and neither of these have seen the light of day since 1951. As such, both forty-eight page programs (8.75x11.5") are not scored. Very Good to Excellent condition overall.
