1952 Boston Herald Original Jackie Robinson Cartoon Artwork by Vic Johnson

1952 Boston Herald Original Jackie Robinson Cartoon Artwork by Vic Johnson

Original cartoon artwork, by Vic Johnson, featuring the highlights of the Brooklyn Dodgers' 1-0 extra-inning victory over the Boston Braves on September 20, 1952. Signed by Johnson in the lower right corner. Jackie Robinson's RBI single off Warren Spahn in the top of the tenth inning was the deciding blow in the game, and both Robinson and Spahn are featured prominently in the cartoon. Vic Johnson was a longtime sports and political cartoonist for the Boston Herald, and this cartoon almost certainly appeared in the pages of the September 21, 1952 issue of the Herald. The title "Tripping the Light Fantastic" is written in pencil along the top border. The cartoon (18x14"), on heavy artist's paper, displays several editorial notations and has been slightly trimmed along the bottom border. Very Good condition overall. It has been mounted, by means of two strips of tape adhered to the reverse, and matted to total dimensions of 24x20". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
