1952 Dan Dailey (as Dizzy Dean) "The Pride of St Louis" Set Worn Uniform
Dizzy Dean was a Hall of Fame right-handed pitcher who pitched in all or parts of 12 Major League seasons: St. Louis Cardinals 1930 and 1932-37; Chicago Cubs 1938-41; St. Louis Browns, 1947. Presented is the Dan Dailey (as Dizzy Dean) worn Chicago Cubs uniform on the set of the movie The Pride of St. Louis. Dizzy was the NL MVP in 1934, when he went 36-14, with a 3.04 ERA. Dean had an amazing run of five seasons with the Cardinals when he won between 33 and 36 games each year (1932-36). A sore arm, resulting from pitching with a broken toe, greatly shortened Dean's career. The displayed vintage wool baseball uniform was worn by the character Dizzy Dean, portrayed by actor Dan Dailey, in the 1952 motion picture The Pride of St. Louis. The uniform was custom made for Dan Daily and it is an exact replica of the Cubs' 1938 uniform. The jersey has an internal 20th Century Fox label with "Job; A564, Date:12-48, inv. 3-85-2-5430" and a white label with "Dan Dailey, Cubs" handwritten in slightly faded ink. The pants have "Dan Dailey" handwritten and an internal 20th Century Fox wardrobe stamp. The original screen used patches were removed and replaced with the number 3 and Indians patches. Dan Dailey wore this outfit in the scene where Dizzy has been traded to the Cubs and pitches against the Yankees. The movie portrays how Dean helped pitch the Cubs to the 1938 NL pennant. The number "22" in navy blue is on the back of the jersey. The jersey was used by Dailey as a Cubs' jersey in the movie, then changed to an Indians jersey for another film and then expertly restored back to its original form by the master tailor from Eastern Costume Company. The uniform comes with letter from The Golden Closet. The uniform exhibits a few spots where there is staining, and there are some areas of darkening on the uniform from the passage of time. Overall, the uniform is in very good condition, especially considering that it is over 70 years old. The item has great cross appeal as it will generate interest in both sports and movie fans.
