Displayed is a New York Yankees AL Championship felt banner for 1953. The banner measures 18x23", and on top reads, "Yankees American-League Champions 1953." In the World Series that season, the Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers by 4-2 in games. On the banner, an image of an infield shows the names of the regular Yankees infielders and a starting battery placed into position across the depicted infield. The names of the Yankee infielders on the banner's infield, from first base to third base: Collins, Martin, Hall of Famer Rizzuto, and McDougald. Depicted on the mound is Hall of Famer Whitey Ford and behind the plate is Hall of Famer Yogi Berra. Other Yankees listed on the banner: Hall of Fame manager Casey Stengel, Bollweg, Hall of Fame first baseman Johnny Mize, Coleman, Silvera, Woodling, Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle, Noren, Renna, Carey, Miranda, McDonald, Houk, Lopat, Reynolds, Raschi, Kusava, Sain, Gorman, Miller, Kraly, Triandos, Schallock, Crosetti (coach), Bill Dickey (coach and Hall of Famer). Berra had an outstanding '53 season, hitting 27 home runs, with 108 RBIs, and a .296 batting average. Mantle hit 21 four-baggers, with 92 RBIs and a .295 batting average. Whitey Ford had an 18-6 record, with a 3.00 ERA. Over the nearly seven decades since this banner originated, the colors appear faded. Because of the passage of time, the banner exhibits some creasing, occasional small stains, and cracking and crinkling in some areas, particularly in the depicted infield. Overall, the banner is a fine remembrance of one of the great New York Yankees teams of the 1950s.
