1954-55 Team Signed Santurce Baseball With Roberto Clemente & Willie Mays
Perhaps the only team-signed ball from the magical interlude in history when Willie and Roberto played in the same outfield and led the Santurce Cangrejeros to the '54-55 Puerto Rican Winter League championship. A collector's ten-strike, the ball is also one of the most unusual in the team-signed genre, with all but 1 of the signatures written in gold marker that has bled just a bit into a striking rusty brown, and while some of the writing is accordingly smudgy, Mays' marker is as clear as the Puerto Rican sunrise on a side panel, just under that of another notable on the ball, Negro league great Bus Clarkson. The Clemente is desirable as not only one of his earliest signatures but for the fact that he signed with only "Clemente" -- a ridiculously rare example that shows how revered he was in his country, even before playing his first big-league game. It may seem presumptuous, even arrogant, but in fact it was how his legion of fans knew him, a la Madonna or Leonardo. Other great names on this splendid ball include Negro leaguer Bob Thurman, manager Herman Franks (one SS) and native baseball great Ruben Gomez (other SS). Ball itself has the stamping of the PRWL and is a clean, smooth and very lightly toned VG-EX.
