1954 Roberto Clemente's First Professional Appearance Program

1954 Roberto Clemente's First Professional Appearance Program

Historic program. Syracuse Chiefs versus Montreal Royals. Syracuse won, 7-6. First professional appearance for Roberto Clemente. The Hall of Famer's name is in the printed program roster, but it appears he did not play in the game. As a bonus baby who was not kept on the major League Brooklyn Dodger roster, Clemente was subject to a draft by other teams following this season, so it appears that Montreal, a top Brooklyn Dodger farm team, tried to "hide" Clemente by playing him sparingly, as he only played in 87 games with 155 at-bats, hitting .257 in his first and only minor league season. Never-the-less, after the season he was drafted by Branch Rickey's Pittsburgh Pirates, and the rest is history. Cover hand date and score handwritten in unknown hand. VG-EX condition with minor creasing.Program is scored for Syracuse only.
