1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Championship Street Banner
This great banner with a huzzah for the Dodgers probably hung high from a tree or lightpost somewhere along Flatbush or Bedford avenues or perhaps Eastern Parkway when the conquering heroes returned from the far-off Bronx with the 1955 World Championship under their belts and were given a victory parade by their fans. The ecstasy -- and perhaps the air of inevitability that they would again lose to the Yankees -- is reflected in the light tan muslin banner silkscreened in bright red with "Welcome Brooklyn Dodgers 1955 National League Champions" -- with "National" crossed out with a red slash and "World" inserted in red before "Champions." This alteration may have been the original concept of the banner, playing to the theme of long-delayed victory, or it may have been modified by an artistic fan once the championship was finally in the bag. Either way, the 33 x 35" banner is a delightful echo of the one and only time Brooklyn could raise such a banner. G-VG with understandable wrinkling and fold marks and mild soiling in spots and small section of shredding along the edge of the lower right side. Mounting holes on each upper corner. Great slice of "Bums" history at their finest hour.
