1955 Eddie Robinson New York Yankees Game Worn Jersey (Photo-Matched)

New York Yankees home jersey worn by first baseman Eddie Robinson in 1955. Lelands has conclusively photo-matched the jersey to one worn by Robinson while posing on the sideline at Yankee Stadium in 1955. (The photo match for this item can be accessed at Getty Images under the following number: 136107782.) The white flannel pinstripe jersey features the Yankees "NY" logo on the left breast and the number "36" on the reverse, both of which are applied in navy felt. A "Spalding" label and "48" size tag appear in the collar. Robinson's name ("E. Robinson"), year ("55"), and uniform number ("36") have been chain-stitched in navy on the left front tail. Both the number and NY logo have been restored (the stitch outline of a previous number is clearly visible) and one button has been replaced. Aside from those changes, the jersey is original as issued and displays several team repairs throughout, including one on the left sleeve that utilized a 2x2" pinstripe swatch on the underside. (The jersey was most likely sent down for use in the minors following the 1955 season; a common practice at the time.)

Eddie Robinson platooned at first base with Moose Skowron in 1955. Appearing in eighty-eight games, Robinson batted .208 with 16 home runs and 42 RBI to help lead the Yankees to the American League pennant. Robinson also played in four World Series games, batting .667 with 1 RBI in the Yankees' seven-game loss to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson enjoyed a successful thirteen-year Major League career even though he lost three full seasons to military service during World War II. He was a starting member of the 1948 World Champion Cleveland Indians and for three consecutive seasons (1951-1953) he hit over 20 home runs and drove in over 100 runs for the Chicago White Sox. Robinson finished his career with 172 home runs, 723 RBI, and a .268 lifetime average. The jersey is accompanied by a 1997 LOA from well respected uniform and bat expert Dave Bushing.
