1955 Ernie Davis Signed Freshman High School Yearbook
A piece of historical memorabilia from one of the more tragic stories in modern football history. Ernie Davis was the first African-American to be awarded the Heisman trophy for his impressive playing at Syracuse University from 1959-61 and was quickly picked up by the Washington Redskins and then immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns. The Pittsburgh native wouldn't play one game however: shortly after being picked up, he developed leukemia and died in May 1963. This yearbook from Elmira's Free Academy, the high school where he was known as the "Elmira Express", is signed to a friend in thin blue marker: "To Sharon, Thanks for all the help. Good Luck. Ernie Davis." Yearbook shows slight wear.
