1955 Gil Hodges Brooklyn Dodgers World Series Bat (PSA)
Gil Hodges H&B pro-model ("S2") bat issued to Hodges for use in the 1955 World Series. The name "Hodges" is stamped on the barrel in block letters. The block lettering above and below his name reads, respectively, "World Series 1955" and "Brooklyn Dodgers." The bat, which measures 35 inches in length and weighs 33.8 ounces, is not cracked and displays no use. This bat has a very special provenance that is well known to Lelands because it first entered the hobby in 2000 when it was offered as Lot 1543 in our "Dynasty Auction." It was one of twenty-one lots in that auction consigned directly by the Gil Hodges Estate, including four World Series bats. This, however, was the only 1955 World Series bat consigned by the family and we cannot recall having seen another H&B example. World Series bats, by their very nature are rare, as H&B issued just two to each player for use in the fall classic. The 1955 World Series marked the first and only World Championship for the Dodgers during their time in Brooklyn and any piece of equipment related to that historic victory is especially significant, especially one issued to a player of Hodges' stature. The fact that Hodges kept this bat, instead of using it the following season as players often did, suggests that it was one of his most treasured keepsakes. Hodges was just recently elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and will be formally inducted this summer, at which time he will join his "Boys of Summer" teammates Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, and Duke Snider in Cooperstown. This is an exceedingly rare and important Hodges bat dating from the most memorable season in Brooklyn Dodgers history. LOA from PSA
