1955 Karl Spooner Brooklyn Dodgers Contract - World Championship Season (PSA)
Four-page fold-over contract between pitcher Karl Spooner and the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club for the 1955 season, signed by each party. The contract, which is dated December 14th (no year filled in, but obviously 1954), has been signed in blue fountain pen by "Karl Benjamin Spooner" (grading 9/10) and Brooklyn Dodgers vice president "E. J. Bavasi" (9/10). The one-year contract, for the 1955 season, calls for Spooner to receive a salary of $7,500 for the season. Karl Spooner was a highly regarded pitching prospect in the Dodgers farm system in 1954 and at the end of the season he was called up to the Majors to show his stuff. He didn't disappoint. In his two starts he pitched two complete-game shutouts, with 27 strikeouts, which quickly convinced the Dodgers brass that he warranted a Major League contract for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury during spring training derailed what might have been a long and successful Major League career. Pitching through the injury, Spooner was able to finish the 1955 season with an 8-6 record and a respectable 3.65 ERA, which helped lead the Dodgers to the 1955 pennant and their first World Championship in franchise history. Spooner's arm injury, however, never fully healed and relegated him to the minors for the next four seasons. He officially retired from professional baseball in 1959. This is a rare one-year only Major League Brooklyn Dodgers contract dating from the club's only World Championship season while in Brooklyn. The contract (8.5x11") remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Full LOA from PSA.
