1955 Peanuts Lowry Philadelphia Phillies Road Flannel Game Worn Jersey

1955 Peanuts Lowry Philadelphia Phillies Road Flannel Game Worn Jersey

Presented is a game worn Harry "Peanuts" Lowery Philadelphia Phillies road uniform. Lowery was a 5'8" outfielder and third baseman who played for 13 Major League seasons, all in the National League, mostly for the Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals. He hit .273 for his career and was frequently used as a pinch hitter. Late in his career, in 1952-53 for the Cardinals, Lowery had superb pinch-hitting success: He was 10-for-20 in '52, for a .500 pinch hitting average, and he went 20-for-55 as a pinch hitter in '53, a .364 pace. In 1955, when this jersey was worn, Lowery was with the Phillies, and this jersey was worn during his final season. The jersey shows "Phillies" in sewn on red script across the chest. In the neck is a tag on which "Lowery" is stitched. The back has "3" in a red, sewn on numeral. The jersey is all original, with the exception of missing Wilson/Year tags. The jersey exhibits great wear. One of the original silver buttons on the front is missing. There are some stains in each armpit area, and a few small stains in other areas, particularly on the left side of the back. The threads on the number "3" on the back show wear, with some threads missing. As a boy, Peanuts spent time living on a Southern California ranch near Culver City where a number of the Our Gang comedies were filmed, and Peanuts was occasionally used as an extra. Lowery's wonderful baseball nickname came from one of two sources. As one possibility, Harry's grandfather used to describe the boy as "no bigger than a peanut." The other possibility is that actress Thelma Todd once promised the little Harry, serving as a movie extra, a bag of peanuts if he would behave on the movie set. The jersey's great use and both Peanuts' colorful name and his pinch-hitting renown make this jersey a great 1950s vintage baseball memento.
