1955 Stan Musial St. Louis Cardinals Signed Game Worn Jersey

1955 Stan Musial St. Louis Cardinals Signed Game Worn Jersey

St. Louis Cardinals home jersey worn by Stan "The Man" Musial during the 1955 season. Musial jerseys dating from the 1950s are scarce. This is just the third we have offered in the past 20 years and the first example from 1955. The embroidered design on the front of the white flannel zipper-front jersey features the team name "Cardinals" interlocked within the club's classic logo of two birds perched on a bat. The number 6 appears on the reverse in red on navy felt. Located on the left front tail are a Rawlings label and adjacent 44 size tag. "Stan Musial" is chain-stitched in red directly below the manufacturer's label. Positioned on the interior left front tail are a laundry tag and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1955." Musial has beautifully inscribed the jersey "Stan Musial HOF 69" in black marker (8/10) on the right front tail. The number 6 on the reverse has been restored (the stitch outline of another number is still visible), otherwise the jersey is original as issued. (Like most Major League jerseys from the era, this jersey was later used by a Cardinals minor league affiliate, which is when the number change occurred.) Heavy wear is evident throughout, including several team repairs and a tiny stain on the reverse. There is also a small unrepaired tear near the top of the zipper. The zipper remains functional.

1955 marked another banner season for Musial. In typical fashion, he posted a .319 batting average to go along with his 33 home runs and 108 RBI. Few players in baseball history could compare with Musial when it came to hitting. "The Man" hit over .300 in each of his first 17 Major Leagues seasons and finished his 22-year career (1941-1963) with a .331 lifetime average. At the time of his retirement, he was the National League all-time hit leader, and second to only Ty Cobb in that category. Today, his remarkable total of 3,630 hits still ranks fourth all-time. Included among his many other accomplishments and achievements are three MVP Awards, seven batting titles, 20 consecutive All-Star Game appearances, 475 home runs, and 1,951 RBI. Like those of his contemporaries, Mantle, Aaron, and Mays, a Musial jersey is a requisite for any advanced Hall of Fame jersey collection and the offered garment represents a fine example dating from the peak of his career.
