1955 Tom Saffell Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Jersey
<p>Tom Saffell was a player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and briefly for the Kansas City Athletics over parts of four seasons - in 1949-51, and again in 1955. Before his Major League career, Saffell joined the Army Air Corps in late 1946 and he flew 61 missions in a P-47 Thunderbolt in Europe. He was discharged in 1946. Saffell played extensively for the Pirates farm club in Hollywood, California, in the Pacific Coast League, and he appeared on the television show <em>Home Run Derby </em>as a pitcher. Later, he was a minor league manager, and also the president of the Gulf Coast Leaue. In 1999, he was a recipient of the King of Baseball Award from Minor League Baseball. The jersey is an all-original road shirt. It displays "Pirates" in black letters with gold trim across the chest. On the inside left front tail is a tag showing "Set #2 1955". On the back is "16" in black with gold trim. The wool shirt has buttons. It shows nice use but is also in good condition. There is a MacGregor size 40 tag in the collar. The jersey is a fine example of a mid-1950s Pittsburgh Pirates jersey that was worn by a a long-term member in the Pirates' organization and a baseball lifer.</p>
