1956 Don Newcombe National League Most Valuable Player Award

1956 Don Newcombe National League Most Valuable Player Award

This is the one and only original MVP award that was presented to Don Newcombe for the 1956 season, when the right-hander went 27–7 with 139 strikeouts, a 3.06 ERA, five shutouts and 18 complete games, leading the league in winning percentage for the second year in a row. That magical season also saw the former Negro League player win the first-ever Cy Young Award. This round, 16" x 16" award was originally obtained directly from Newcombe. It shows it age with a wonderful patina on the metal, which is stamped "STERLING" at the bottom right corner. The wording on the plaque reads: "KENESAW MOUNTAIN LANDIS MEMORIAL BASEBALL AWARD MOST VALUABLE PLAYER NATIONAL LEAGUE DONALD NEWCOMBE BROOKLYN DODGERS 1956." The placard features the likeness of Landis, the baseball commissioner from 1921 to 1944, is genuine gold and stamped "10K." The wooden backing is painted its original black and shows a scratch here and there. Dieges and Clust metal tag on the back. Until 2011, when Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander achieved the feat, Newcombe was the only baseball player to have won the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards in his career. Newcombe played eight of his 11 major league seasons with Brooklyn, compiling a 149-90 overall record, four All-Star appearances and helping the Dodgers end their championship jinx with a huge World Series triumph over the rival New York Yankees in 1955. He missed two years of his prime (1952-53) while serving his country in the Korean War. This substantial award is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of baseball history!
