1956 Kansas City Athletics Game Worn Flannel Jersey
A bench mark 1956 second season for one of the then worst teams in Major League Baseball, the Kansas City Athletics (1955-67), in an effort to display a new identity, one separate from the Philadelphia team from which they came, cast away the previous Philadelphia players, only to lose some of them to the New York Yankees who would go on to win a few pennants with those same cast-offs. That year, 1956, had these struggling Athletics finishing last. Whose well-worn flannel this is remains unknown (a red #51 is individually sewn on back) , yet it carries with it such aforementioned notorious distinctions, as well as some nice use around the collar and shoulders, and a nifty mascot logo sewn onto left sleeve, a red elephant balancing on a baseball with bat held by its trunk. Includes small “1956” patch on front left tail, next to manufacturer’s tag, “Wilson 42". “Athletics” in red, bridging across buttoned-down chest.
