1956 Roberto Clemente Signed Players Contract and Signed Rookie Documents (7 pieces)
Fascinating assemblage of revealing material regarding a post rookie Roberto Clemente includes four Clemente signatures including an exceptional Player's contract for the Puerto Rican superstar. Contract is signed in blue ballpoint and dated by Roberto Clemente, 2/3/1956 with an approved stamp of March 6, 1956 and stamped signatures of Warren Giles and Joe Brown. Printed on same page is Clemente's address in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Contract is EX+ overall and for the sum of $7,500.00 per season. The original rejected contract in the amount of $7,000.00 is also included (unsigned) and signed by Branch Rickey. The accompanying "rookie" documents include a typed letter signed by Clemente in blue ink, addressed to Rickey, rejecting the initial contract offered to him, and asking for a "substantial raise" based upon his performance over the last season. Also included is the very detailed response letter in reply, from Rickey, explaining why Clemente was not deserving of a raise. Lot also includes an employee card and postal service card - both signed in blue ballpoint by Clemente and both dated 1956. An incredible collection of early and important paper with fabulous autographs from this adored baseball hero.
