1957 Harmon Killebrew Washington Senators Signed Game Worn Jersey

1957 Harmon Killebrew Washington Senators Signed Game Worn Jersey

Presented is a beautiful 1957 Harmon Killebrew #12 Washington Senators game worn jersey. This is quite an amazing offering because Washington Senators' game worn jerseys from the 1950s are very rare, and a Senators' jersey worn by Hall of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew is even rarer - almost non-existent - the only one we have ever seen. Known as 'Killer" and as "Hammerin' Harmon," Killebrew was a power hitter of great strength who played 22 seasons in the Major Leagues, all but one for the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins franchise. When Killebrew retired after the 1975 season, his lone year with another team (the Kansas City Royals), he had 573 lifetime home runs - the fifth most homers in Major League history, second only to babe Ruth in career home runs by an American Leaguer, and the most home runs ever by a right-handed batter in the American League. Presented is a beautiful 1957 Harmon Killebrew #12 Washington Senators game worn jersey. Killebrew's great strength seems to be a combination of nature and nurture. According to his family history, Harmon's grandfather won many wrestling champions in the Union Army, and he was reputed to be the strongest soldier in the Union's ranks. Harmon grew up on a farm in Idaho, and he regularly lifted 95-pound milk cans. This inherited and developed strength helped Killebrew become a 13-time All-Star, a 6-time American League home run leader, a 3-time AL RBI champ, and the AL MVP in 1969. Killebrew was signed in 1954 as a "Bonus Baby," and according to the rules at the time, he had to be kept on the Senators' roster for two years or risk being lost to other teams. Harmon was still only 17 when he made his Major League debut in 1954. He was a first and third baseman, and a left fielder. In 1957, Killebrew wore #12, and he wore this #12 jersey during spring training, but early in the regular season he switched his jersey number to "3." Thus, this Set 1 jersey may very well have been worn by Killebrew during one of his nine regular season games in 1957, but we cannot confirm that. This original jersey is in light gray. "Washington" is stitched across the front in dark blue on red tackle twill letters. On the back, #12 is stitched in the same dark blue on red tackle twill. The collar has a gray felt rectangular swatch that reads "Killebrew - 57," showing the player's name and year of use for the jersey. The front outside tail has a bright blue Spalding manufacturer's tag and an adjacent tag that shows a "44" size. Below the above tag is "Killebrew - Set 1- 1957," beautifully stitched in dark blue. Killebrew has neatly signed his name in 8/10 black Sharpie above the Spalding tag. This 1957 zipper front jersey does have a very small stain in the mid-front, but overall, it is in outstanding condition and presents remarkably well. As former Washington Senators player, coach, and manager Ossie Bluege said of the muscled Killebrew: "He hit line drives that put the opposition in jeopardy. And I don't mean infielders, I mean outfielders." This extremely rare Killebrew Washington Senators game worn and signed jersey is a gorgeous remembrance for one of baseball's hardest hitters.
