1957 New York Giants Last Game in New York Program

1957 New York Giants Last Game in New York Program

The New York Giants franchise began in 1883 as the New York Gothams. They became the New York Giants in 1885. The team's last game as a New York team was on Sunday afternoon, September 29, 1957, when they hosted the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Polo Grounds, with Pittsburgh winning 9-1. Presented is a combination program/scorecard from the franchise's final game as a New York club. The scorecard in the program is scored in pencil for almost an inning and a half. It was a sad and historic day in baseball. Both the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers would be taking their rivalry to the West Coast in 1958, and only 11,606 fans were at the Polo Grounds to witness the Giants' farewell game. It seemed as if Giants manager Bill Rigney wanted to salute the Giants' history as his starting line-up included players from the Giants most recent pennant winners: the Miracle of Coogan's Bluff 1951 team and the 1954 squad that won the World Series. Starting for the Giants in the team's final game were four players who were on both the 1951 and 1954 Giants: Hall of Famer Willie Mays, Don Mueller, Whitey Lockman, and Wes Westrum. Bobby Thomson was the hero of the famous 1951 Miracle of Coogan's Bluff play-off game, and he was back in the Giants' starting line-up in the team's final game. Joining the aforementioned players in the starting line-up were Dusty Rhodes and Johnny Antonelli from the 1954 Giants. The handwritten lineup in the program lists the complete starting lineups for each team. Hall of Famers in the Pittsburgh Pirates' starting lineup were Bill Mazeroski at second base and Roberto Clemente in right field. In this final game, the lone Giants' run was scored on a sacrifice fly by one of the heroes of the 1954 World Series, Dusty Rhodes. Mazeroski went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Clemente was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Pirates starter Bob Friend took the win, and Antonelli had the loss. The program measures 5.9x9.75" and it has 24 pages, including the covers. The program has some writing, in an unknown hand, in blue ink from a ballpoint pen, on the lower part of the cover, which states, "Sept 29, 1957/Last game of Season." The picture in the program of Bill Rigney has been embellished in pencil from an unknown hand, giving Rigney eyeglasses, and some rather comical extra facial hair, and a few other places in the program have minor pencil markings. The few pencil markings in the program have little effect on the condition of the offering, an item in very good condition. The program/scorecard provides wonderful nostalgia for mid-Twentieth Century New York City baseball, and the last game in the history of the fabled New York Giants.
