1958 Ted Williams, Ernie Banks, Casey Stengel, Warren Spahn "Records" by Ray Gotto - Published in The Sporting News
Originally published in The Sporting News, this delightful pen & ink illustration is from noted cartoonist Ray Gotto. It depicts nine different Major Leaguers along with a distinctive claim to fame, thus the title "Records." While the numbers are not filled in, highlights include Ted Williams becoming the oldest batting champ, Ernie Banks' record for homers by a shortstop, and Casey Stengel's World Series victory total. Gotto was a significant figure, as he was the designer of the New York Mets' skyline logo, and was responsible for famed baseball comics Ozark Ike (1945-53) and Cotton Woods (1955-58). Measuring 18.5x22.25", it is in Excellent condition, including original printer's markings. This rarity comes form the Sporting News collection sold at auction several years ago.
