Epic treatment of the also epic Ingemar Johansson v. Floyd Patterson fight at Yankee Stadium on June 26, 1959. Brilliant interpretation of one of the great fights in history was created for the Esquire magazine editorial "Highlights of a Golden Decade" by renowned sports author Roger Kahn (Boys of Summer, 1972) and was published in the December 1960 issue. The piece is signed by the artist at the bottom right corner and the verso has both the Esquire and Schwartz stamps. Lower right (date was removed following its publication) and the back of the canvas has the "Daniel Bennett Schwartz" stamp. Measures 24x30". Although bitter rivals while in the game, Johansson and Patterson became quite close friends in their later years, similar to that of Joe Louis and Max Schmeling.Daniel Schwartz is an award-winning illustrator who has worked for such top periodicals as Esquire, Fortune and Playboy. His works are in the collections of Leonard Bernstein, William Styron, Gay Talese, William Paley and Daniel Selznick. A sculptor as well, he was commissioned by the NFL in 1968 to create the bronze that became the Walter Payton NFL "Man of the Year" Award.
