1959 Roy Campanella Night Award Given to Elston Howard
Originally obtained from the Howard estate, these awards were given to the Yankee players who took part in the May 9, 1962 exhibition game that drew over 92,000 fans to the L.A. Coliseum. The piece is in EX condition despite some abrasions and the metal baseball loose from its base. The bowl is inscribed with the following: "YANKEE-DODGER GAME IN HONOR OF ROY CAMPANELLA MAY 7TH 1959 LOS ANGELES COLISEUM." A plaque on the base reads: "LOS ANGELES EXAMINER AWARD PRESENTED TO ELSTON HOWARD WITH SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE YANKEE-DODGER GAME." The detached ball has a facsimile Campanella signature etched into it. The Yankees won the game, 6-2, and the crowd was the largest ever to see a major league baseball game, a record that still stands.
