1959 Syracuse Orangemen Game Ball Carried by Ernie Davis from National Championship Season - Sourced from Captain Ger Schwedes
Game used ball from Syracuse versus Maryland October 3, 1959. Syracuse won 29-0. This ball was given to captain Ger Schwedes. Signed in bold silver felt tipped marker by Schwedes, "Ball carried by Ernie and I in '59, Ger Schwedes - Capt." Schwedes, a halfback, led Syracuse to their victory in the New Year's Day 1960 Cotton Bowl, a win that enabled Syracuse to remain undefeated and thus take the National Championship for the 1959 season. Panel painted with the score of the game. Ball was signed by 19 players and ball was shellacked afterwards. In 1961, Halfback Ernie Davis went on to win become the first African-American to win Heisman Trophy in 1961. Then he was the first selection in the 1962 NFL draft, but became ill from leukemia that summer and passed away a year later before he could ever play for the Cleveland Browns.
