1960-61 Ernie Davis Heisman Trophy Winning Syracuse University Game Worn Jersey

1960-61 Ernie Davis Heisman Trophy Winning Syracuse University Game Worn Jersey

One of the true Holy Grails of football jerseys. Ernie Davis' short-lived but spectacular career was one of the most historic football stories of all-time, made even more famous by the critically acclaimed 2008 biopic "The Express." Growing up in Elmira, NY, the "Elmira Express" was a talent that was unheard and unseen since fellow alumnus Jim Brown. At a time when Brown was dominating college football two hours away from Elmira, a young Ernie Davis grew to idolize the legend. What Davis did not expect however was to be recruited and eventually persuaded by Jim Brown to attend Syracuse University. Throughout his college career, Ernie Davis wore the classic "44" in honor of Jim Brown. Most importantly, he became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. This unique jersey is as spectacular a specimen of this important a jersey to exist. Historically important Wilson #44 was worn by Ernie Davis as a member of the Syracuse Orange during his 1960-61 Heisman Trophy winning season. This jersey is a white, dureen jersey that has "44" in dark blue (sewn with orange thread) on the front and back. On the front tail of the jersey is a Wilson size 48 tag. This jersey shows great use with blood stains, paint transfers, dirt stains and even a team repair. A museum piece, the historical importance shines through of an era when Davis broke down both sports and cultural barriers as an athlete of color. One of the finest college jerseys extant if not any football jersey. Tremendous history from the first season in which an African-American won the Heisman Trophy. Comes with a detailed LOA showing Ernie Davis wearing the style of jersey along with a description of the traits that make this an authentic game worn Ernie Davis jersey. Even though he was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Browns in 1962, the NFL sadly never saw Davis as he passed away from Leukemia before he got to step foot on the field. Being that he never wore a professional jersey in a game, this jersey is one of the very few that he wore during his career.

Addendum:We were made aware by a prominent Syracuse expert that the football team did wear this same style jersey after Ernie Davis graduated and up until 1966
