1960 Detroit Tigers v Pittsburgh Pirates in First Place Sporting News Original Art by Willard Mullin

Yo-Ho-Ho and a bottle of first-place spirits. Published in The Sporting News, this marvelous original image from the hand of famed cartoonist Willard Mullin depicts a drunk, raucous pirates riding a ferocious-looking Tiger as both clubs burst out the gate that spring with great starts (PIT 8-3, DET 5-0). The Bucs would sustain their success, concluding the year by edging the Yankees for the World Series crown on Bill Mazeroski's dramatic Game 7 home run. On the other hand, reality would set in for the Tigers, who would go on to finish a mediocre sixth in the American League standings. The artwork measures roughly roughly 22" x 15".

These select pieces were saved by one of the original owners of The Sporting News Original Art Archives. These represent some of the better images by the finest artists including Willard Mullin, Karl Hubenthal, Leo O’Melia and the unsung hero, Lou Darvas.
