1960 Dick Groat Pittsburgh Pirates Game Worn Jersey - MVP and World Championship Season - w/Groat LOA

Pittsburgh Pirates road jersey worn by National League batting champion Dick Groat during his 1960 MVP season and possibly during the 1960 World Series. This jersey comes with the special provenance of originating directly from Dick Groat's personal collection and is accompanied by a signed letter from Groat on the letterhead of the auction house that first offered it in 2018. Our consignor obtained it at that 2018 sale and it has been in her family's sole possession since that time. Aside from Roberto Clemente's jersey, we cannot imagine a more significant Pittsburg Pirates example dating from the club's 1960 World Championship season. Groat batted a league-high.325 with 2 home runs and 50 RBI in 1960 to help lead the Pirates to their first World Series victory since 1925. Following the season he easily beat out teammate Don Hoak for MVP honors, garnering an 82% share of the voting. A perennial All-Star, Groat finished his 14-year career in 1967 with 39 home runs, 707 RBI, and a .286 lifetime average.

The gray flannel vest-style jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the chest and features the number "24" on the reverse. A "MacGregor size 42" appears in the collar. Located on the interior right front tail is a flag tag reading "Set 1 1960." The jersey is all original and displays moderate wear, including a few small team repairs on the front and reverse, as well as a few tiny stains near the base of the front collar. It is known that many of the Pirates players retained their 1960 World Series uniforms. That fact, along with the moderate wear, leads us to believe that this jersey was likely worn by Groat during the 1960 fall classic. This is an exceptional 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates World Championship jersey worn by the team's top player that season.
