1960 Muhammad Ali Rome Olympics Medal and Badges from His Coach (4)
Superb lot features four items from Muhammad Ali's Gold Medal turn at the 1960 Olympics. They come from boxing coach Julius Menendez and includes Letter of Authenticity from his son. Menendez was Ali's coach for the Olympics and it is not out of the question to think that some of these may have been given to Ali and in turn Ali gave them to Menendez as some of these items look a little fancy to be given to coaches. 1) Participation medal measuring 2.25" in diameter, "Giogi Della XVII Oliampiade Roma MCMLX" circling one side. 2) Approximately 1x1" metal belt buckle with rings and engraved "Olympic Games Rome 1960." 3) Technico badge, pinback measuring 1.25x1.75"; we were told that only 64 of these were issued. 4) Tie clip in the form of a key with USA Olympic shield and "1960 US OLYMPIC TEAM" engraved. Then known as Cassius Clay, the young pugilist stormed through a tough field to capture the gold, though The Greatest supposedly tossed it into the Ohio River after being denied service at a "whites only" restaurant.
