1960 Nellie Fox 2,000th Career Hit Baseball and Trophy (Family LOA)

1960 Nellie Fox 2,000th Career Hit Baseball and Trophy (Family LOA)

"I don't think anyone ever liked to play more than I did," said Nelson "Nellie" Fox, the hustling, scrappy Hall of Fame second baseman. Displayed is a Nellie Fox signed and inscribed baseball that was used for his 2,000th hit, and a Wilson Sporting Goods Trophy presented to Fox to commemorate and display his 2,000th hit ball. Fox broke into the Major Leagues in 1947 with Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics and played in 19 Major League seasons: Philadelphia Athletics (1947-49), Chicago White Sox (1950-63), and Houston Astros (1964-65). Since Fox never got to 3,000 hits, the 2,000th hit is a major milestone. The signed baseball comes directly from the Fox family, with an included LOA from Fox's daughter. The trophy was presented to Nellie Fox from the Wilson Sporting Goods Company. The wooden trophy has a width of 11", a height of 11.5", and a depth of 4.5". The wording on the metal plaque (irregularly shaped at approx. 3.25x7") at the top of the trophy reads, "Nellie Fox's 2000th Major League Hit/With this ball, Nellie Fox, of the Chicago White Sox, made his 2000TH Major League hit. It came on July 24, 1960, in the first inning of the first game of a double header against the New York Yankees in New York (at Yankee Stadium) and was made off Jim Coates. With this hit, Nellie became the 103rd major league player to get 2,000 hits." Another metal plaque (approx. 1.3x10.7"), at the base of the trophy, reads, "This Trophy Is Presented To Him By His Many Friends And Fans At The Wilson Sporting Goods Co." This trophy was made with a small metal ball stand to display the signed baseball. The Official American League (Cronin) ball shows great use. The aforementioned stamped printing on the baseball has faded but is still visible. The ball has "2,000" written in black ink from a fine tipped marker, and the three zeros in the number have been filled-in with the aforementioned black ink. On a side panel, "Nellie Fox Chicago White Sox 2,000 Hits," the last two zeros in the aforementioned "2,000" are not legible and only partially appear. The baseball shows great use. There is foxing and darkening, and some places where the "skin" of the ball is missing or stained. The trophy and the 2,000th hit baseball together weigh 62.75 ounces. The trophy is EX-MT, and it is a fine remembrance for fan favorite Nellie Fox.
