1960 U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials Cassius Clay Champion Full Ticket (PSA)
Presented is a full ticket to the May 18, 1960, Olympics Boxing Trials (May 18-20) in which Cassius Clay earned a spot as a light heavyweight on the United States Olympic Boxing Team that would be competing in Rome that summer. Muhammad Ali (whose name was Cassius Clay when he won his 1960 Olympic Gold Medal), grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and began learning to fight at the age of 12. In the Olympic Trials of 1960, he was still known by his birth name of Cassius Clay. In these trials, Clay registered three victories, a TKO in his final one against Allen Hudson (after suffering the indignity of being knocked down) sending him to Rome. In the 1960 Olympics, Clay defeated three opponents in the light-heavyweight division to reach the finals against Poland's Zbigniew Pietrzykowski, who was 25 years old. Zbigniew was a southpaw, and left-handed boxers had given Clay trouble in the past, but Clay won in a decision against Pietrzykowski, and then soon turned professional, winning his first bout, against Tunney Hunsaker, on Oct. 29, 1960. On Feb. 25, 1964, Clay won the World Heavyweight title as he beat Liston for the first time via the retirement on his stool of the latter prior to the seventh round. Soon after, the new World's Champion officially changed his name to Muhammad Ali. During the Vietnam War, for his refusal to be drafted, Ali was stripped of his title in 1967. Ali regained his World Heavyweight crown in 1974 when he defeated George Foreman. In 1978, Ali lost and then regained the World Heavyweight title in matches against Leon Spinks. Thereafter, following a championship fight loss to Larry Holmes in 1980, Ali was beaten in another comeback contest the following year by Trevor Berbick, a bout which could have led to Ali's receiving another chance to reclaim the heavyweight title, and soon after finally retired from the ring. The offered full ticket, measuring approx. 1.1x3.75", is for a $1.25 general admission to San Francisco's Cow Palace. The ticket has been encapsulated and PSA graded AUTHENTIC. The ticket appears to be in great condition, in our opinion NRMT.
