1961 Mickey Mantle & Roger Maris Signed Perry Como Appearance Contracts from Historic Season (PSA)

Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle were big stars in 1961, and so was "The Perry Como Kraft Music Hall" television show. Showing foresight, the executives from the show signed up Maris and Mantle on September 5, 1961, for an appearance for the taping of the show in New York City on September 29th. At the time they signed these contracts, both Maris and Mantle were in a neck-and-neck race to break Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60. The contracts call for each of the" M and M Boys" to receive $7,500, good money in 1961. The signed contracts were sent to Frank Scott, one of baseball's first agents, and the representative of both sluggers. Mantle became ill from an abscess and lost games in September, and he finished with 54 home runs, but his housemate, Maris, broke Ruth's record, supposed asterisk and all, on the final day of the season on September 30th. This game was played the next afternoon following the taping of the show, and Maris hit number 61 off Tracy Stallard, of the Boston Red Sox, at Yankee Stadium. The show was televised on October 4th. Both the Maris and Mantle signatures are on the first page of each full contract, and each is neatly signed in blue ballpoint pen. The contracts come with a PSA LOA. The signed contracts provide a unique item of nostalgia from a truly memorable baseball year.
