1961 Roger Maris Original Film Negative

1961 Roger Maris Original Film Negative

Original film negative capturing Roger Maris posing in the locker room at Yankee Stadium holding the bat with which he hit his 40th home run in 1961. Maris manages a rare smile during that historic record-breaking season as he proudly displays the bat, which is marked "40" on the barrel. Maris' 40th home run represented a career high for him at the time, and was one better than his total of 39 during his 1960 MVP season. As noted on the accompanying original paper sleeve, Maris hit his 37th, 38th 39th, and 40th home runs of the season during a doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox on July 25th. The negative (2.5x3") remains in Excellent to Mint condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Archive. (Please note: the positive image seen on our website is for illustrative purposes only and does not accompany the negative; only the negative is offered in this lot.)
