1961 Willie Mays Rawlings Gold Glove Award
For the first 12 years Rawlings announced a Gold Glove team, Willie Mays was always singled out as one of the top outfielders in the National League. For only the second time ever, one of the "Say Hey Kid's" Gold Gloves has been offered publicly, so you have an opportunity to own a precious piece of history from arguably the game's greatest all-around player. This is the fifth of his fielding prizes - the 1961 Gold Glove. Originally purchased in the early 1980s from a Mays family member, it has been part of a private collection for nearly three decades and is in EX condition. This supreme collectible would be the cornerstone of any Mays or Gold Glove collection. In fact, it would be the cornerstone of most collections, period! The actual glove comprises the left side of the award and features "MAJOR LEAGUE ALL-STAR FIELDING TEAM" printed on the heel. A gold baseball with 1961 is on the right with the diamond-shaped wood plaque in the back. It reads: "RAWLINGS GOLD GLOVE AWARD" while the base plaque displays the following: "PRESENTED TO WILLIE MAYS SELECTED FOR THE SPORTING NEWS MAJOR LEAGUE ALL-STAR FIELDING TEAM." The entire piece is 16" wide and nearly just as tall. A dazzling display to be cherished forever!
