1962 Jim Owens Philadelphia Phillies Game Worn Jersey

1962 Jim Owens Philadelphia Phillies Game Worn Jersey

<p>1962 Philadelphia Phillies home jersey worn by pitcher Jim Owens in 1962. The white, pinstriped flannel jersey is lettered "Phillies" across the front and features the number "49" on the reverse. All lettering is applied in maroon chenille on white tackle twill. The name "J. Owens" is chain-stitched in black on a white strip tag in the collar. Located on the left front tail are a "Wilson Size 44" wash label and an adjacent "1962" year tag. The jersey is all original and displays excellent wear, including a few minor stains on the reverse. Jim Owens was one of the Phillies top pitching prospects in the late 1950s, owning one of the best curveballs in the game. Unfortunately, his penchant for fast living derailed a once promising career. A member of the Phillies infamous "Dalton Gang," a group of rowdy hard-living players on the team at the time, Owens was unable to realize his potential on the mound. Even the great Robin Roberts was unable to influence him: "My advice to him was to throw hard and mix in some sleep, but it didn't seem to take." After Owens finished the 1962 season with a 2-4 record and 6.33 ERA, the Phillies finally cut ties with him, trading him to the Cincinnati Reds for Cookie Rojas. In 1964 Owens became an original member of the Colt 45's expansion team, which is where his career finally ended in 1967. He retired with a lifetime record of 42-68, and a 4.31 ERA.&nbsp;</p>
